AND VIDEO EDITING

The Objective

To share a youth perspective from a virtual briefing at COP27, an annual global summit for countries to gather and take action towards achieving the world’s collective climate goals.

The Process

This required listening to this Virtual Briefing and capturing some important moments and meaningful insights from the two students. I used Adobe Premiere Pro to isolate the sound recording from the video file, along with basic audio editing to remove and clean-up any unwanted audio and background noise.

Following this, I combined stock video footage with the audio to create engaging clips for social media. I was careful in selecting the clips of stock footage as I wanted them to represent a diverse group of youth and individuals that were taking steps towards climate action.

The Outcome

Due to using a less-trending audio, this Instagram reel did not have as much reach as other videos, but I enjoyed listening to the experiences of SFU students at COP27 and help share their thoughts, hopes and experiences to a wider audience, especially at such a pivotal time for climate action.

Why This Project was Significant to Me

In many climate conversations, youth perspectives are often left to the side as climate and civic action is often seen as a topic “left for the adults“ or for politicians. I remember having strong feelings of wanting to make a difference when I was a teenager. With my 8-person student club in secondary school, I often felt at a loss when it came to actually making a meaningful impact that went beyond just gathering donations. It was inspiring seeing an increasing youth presence at global climate summits such as COP27, and rewarding to uplift this perspective and promote a growing youth presence, showing how young people can contribute to the conversation in areas such as civic processes and decision making, urban sustainability, and climate action.
