Instagram Reel: Decolonizing the Shoreline
A short but compelling Instagram reel showcasing “Decolonizing the Shoreline”, an online dialogue that a SFU Centre for Dialogue Fellow, Ginger Gosnell-Myers, hosted in collaboration with the City of Vancouver as a part of their Sea2City Design Challenge. The conversation was about the recent initiatives and successes the Coastal First Nations have achieved for shoreline health, with insights on how the City of Vancouver can apply this to the future of the False Creek Shoreline.
The Objective
To showcase and promote this online dialogue on social media in a short, yet informative and compelling manner.
The Process
This required using Adobe Audition to isolate the sound recording from the webinar, along with basic audio editing to remove and clean-up any unwanted audio and background noise. I then used Adobe Premiere Pro to combine stock video footage with the audio to create captivating clips for social media.
The Outcome
This Instagram reel is currently the Centre’s most-viewed reel, with almost 5,000 views, a reach of 4,500, and 79 interactions.
Why This Project was Significant to Me
Growing up in Vancouver, BC, I have spent a significant portion of my time by the sea wall, a significant aspect of the False Creek shoreline. With rising sea levels and climate change, I can’t help but think about how future generations may not be able to enjoy the same coastal shorelines I have. This reel is significant in showing how decolonization really has a place in urban planning and sustainability, ecological revitalization, and climate action, even when it comes to something as unique and specific as a local shoreline.
Decolonizing a shoreline may come across as a foreign concept for many audiences, and an hour-long Zoom webinar may be intimidating to those who are new to this nuanced topic. Support and uplifting Indigenous voices as one of the (many) steps towards reconciliation and decolonization is important to me, and I enjoyed creating this short reel to promote this nuanced topic while making it more approachable at the same time.
